The name 'Spijkerpakkenband' probably doesn't
ring a bell, so here's the explanation :
In dutch Spijkerpak means 'jeans suit'. So the name could roughly be translated into jeanssuitband.
We carry the name, because the bandmembers wear blue jeans and jeans jackets on concerts. Since the band consists of youth only, the idea of wearing a different outfit didn't appeal very much.
We find that when we play somewhere for the first time, people wonder how this bunch of adolesences can make such music.
What is de Spijkerpakkenband?
'De Spijkerpakkenband' is a brassband located
in the northern part of the Netherlands, in a place called Frisia. The
band was founded in 1989 as a cooperation between the youth of several
brassbands, each of which Sijtze van der Hoek was the conductor.
The newly formed youth band participated in a competition to see how high it would score, and won a first prize with honour. This was an entirely new experience to the members, although that wasn't the most important part. The youth had a lot of fun playing in this youth band, and wanted to continue playing together. Thus 'De Spijkerpakkenband' was born, mainly formed of youth members of two bands, namely 'De Bazuin' of Ureterp, and 'De Sjofaar' of Frieschepalen.
The band first played on project base, which meant the band didn't practice every week, but only if there was a special project.
The band has recently celebrated its 10 year existance. This was done by a lustrum concert together with the 'Josti Band Orchestra'. This band consisted solely of mentally handicapted people.
The band was founded in april 1989, and has recently
celebrated its 10 year existance.
The age of the bandmembers lie between 16 and 25 years.
